Journal Spotlight | Lauren Propes & Ryan Cross
--
Each week, students submit a journal entry that serves as their reflection from guest speakers and business visits from the previous week. Beyond simply recapping the exact material that was covered, students are pushed to dive deeper.
--
Students record what lessons they learned and spend time thinking about how they will apply those concepts to their daily lives and future careers.

Enjoy a glimpse into Lauren and Ryan's journal from our recent talk and tour at Wood River Refinery!

Lauren:

I loved the Phillips 66 days! The first day was very interesting to me, especially because I’m a big science person. I went into these two days knowing nothing about refineries or how they were run, but I was able to learn so much from this experience.

The second day was so much fun, I loved touring the facility. It was very useful to have Ryan come in first, so that while we were touring we already had the basic information of how things worked.

Ryan:

On Tuesday and Wednesday when we got to talk with Ryan Frank and Jerry Knoyle, it was very entertaining to learn about a big corporation. Some big corporations seem like they don't necessarily treat their employees very well, but not in this case. When someone asked Jerry Knoyle why he had never left the company, he said because they never gave him a reason to.

Learning from a manager of a big corp provided me a big takeaway, and that was that your attitude is the main thing you need to focus on to be successful. If you have a horrible attitude, you will not do your best, and the people in that company will not enjoy working with you. Jerry also told us to be open to change. He spent a lot of time in other countries, and he and his family kept moving. Jerry had an amazing attitude and all while having good humor and getting the job done. I really enjoyed getting to tour a very successful and necessary business!
