Wood River Refinery - Part 1!
--
“The best part of my job? Getting the opportunity to come up with solutions to difficult problems. Thinking outside the box and being able to defend the “why” behind developed strategies and ideas is a big reason I enjoy my career.”
--
Project engineer for Phillips 66, Ryan Frank, joined class this morning as a precursor to our on-site tour of the Wood River Refinery happening tomorrow! The Wood River Refinery is Phillips 66’s largest and serves as the 12th largest refinery in the nation, covering 2,700 acres and employing over 850 employees, 400 routine contractors and 15 unions.
--
Ryan explained the science and processes behind how the refinery processes roughly 346,000 barrels per day of crude oil into vital products for our economy (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel etc.). He also emphasized that SAFETY is the absolute top priority for all at P66.
--
In addition to the science behind these processes, Ryan discussed the complicated economics behind the business. The business and HR side of P66 have to constantly assess fluctuations in the price of crude oil, have to thoroughly understand refinery operations and anticipate continuous market changes.
--
A huge thank you to Ryan for joining class today. We cannot wait to visit with you again tomorrow and see the refinery in action!
