Edwardsville CEO entrepreneurs had the opportunity to meet with Alex St. Peters at True Value Rental in Edwardsville this morning. Alex and his grandfather, Dale St. Peters, run the Edwardsville location of their family’s store. The Edwardsville location was an expansion by the family after opening St. Peters Hardware and Rental in Alton for over 70 years. Today the Alton store is over 17,000 sq. ft. with over 30,000 different items. The building also houses a full-service rental store.

St. Peters Hardware has remained a family-owned business and currently, their second and third generation owners are Dale, Doug, and Dan St. Peters. The hardware store is a licensed dealer for DeWalt power tools, Milwaukee electric tools, Stanley Bostich nail guns and Wacker equipment. They carry full lines of Occidental Leather tool belts, Stabila levels, Forney welding supplies, Scotts fertilizers, and True Value paints.

Student discussions with Alex & Dale St. Peters, as well as their trained staff, welcomed many valuable business concepts and topics:
--
• Don’t ever stand in the way of progress. Be willing to take a risk, trust your staff and believe that change can do good things.
• Being an independently owned True Value franchise and certified dealership comes with a lot of benefits – Alex discussed some of the rules and benefits that go along with franchising including networking for young professionals, training programs, market research and more!
• When you don’t know, seek advice! Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
• Never stop asking questions.
• Treat your staff well. You have to be able to trust each other, have mutual respect and have FUN.
• Customer relations are everything. You have to have patience. Be willing and able to explain your reasoning to a customer, especially in times of disagreement. Most of the time, customers are reasonable and will agree to a mutual resolution when you are patient, explanatory and understanding.
• ALWAYS do ANY job to the BEST of your ability, even if it is not fun.

Thank you to Alex and the St.Peters family for allowing CEO to visit and hear your story!
