“If you judge a book by its cover, you might miss out on an amazing story.”
--
Edwardsville CEO had the pleasure of hearing from one of our mentors, Dave Toby, this morning. Dave’s story is one that illustrates that life is often filled with unexpected twists and turns. In high school, Dave “jazz hands” Toby was immersed in theater and jazz! He wanted to go to college to be a performance art major. When his father encouraged him to purse a different path, he decided to go into radio broadcasting.
--
Still not certain what he wanted to do as a career after graduation, he started applying to anywhere that was looking to hire. He stumbled upon an executive training program at Venture. After embracing the opportunity, Dave quickly rose through the ranks as the youngest store manager in company history. When the company went bankrupt shortly there after, Dave transitioned to a market manager position at Kohls and helped bring 7 stores to the St. Louis area.
--
In his early 30s, Dave found himself asking if this career was what he really wanted to do for the rest of his life. Through a friendly connection, and being willing to open a new book, Dave was introduced to the FCB family. With no banking experience, the bank took a chance on Dave and brought him on when the new location opened in 2003, and the rest, they say, is history.

Dave’s life advice?
• Don’t be afraid to open the book and explore the opportunities.
• Every experience, good or bad, plays into who you become.
• There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.
• Don’t judge others and assume they are taking the stairs – you have no idea of their circumstances and they are likely on a different elevator.
• You need people as much as they need you.
• Perception is reality, treat EVERYONE like they are your biggest client.

Dave is a shining example of how incredible our community in the Edwardsville Glen Carbon area truly is. It is each of our responsibilities to find a way to give back to those that have lifted us up.
--
Dave, we cannot thank you enough for all of your guidance, support and time. We are truly lucky to have you in the CEO family!
